Job Description

The Boston College Marine Biogeochemistry Laboratory (PI: Prof. Hilary Palevsky) is seeking a full time research assistant to join our team. 

Marine Biogeochemistry Laboratory Manager/Research Assistant

The research assistant will manage laboratory inventory, instrumentation, and scheduling; run total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon analyzers and assist with troubleshooting; lead quality control and documentation of data from laboratory analyses; and assist with fieldwork preparation and instrument calibration. Additional responsibilities may include management of data from autonomous biogeochemical sensors and development and implementation of MATLAB and/or Python code for sensor data processing and calibration. The position may also include opportunities for the research assistant to assist with coastal and/or open ocean field work.

This position is intended to support an early career scientist (having completed a B.A. or B.S. in a STEM field) in developing and achieving their career goals. The hiring and onboarding process will include discussion of the individual’s career goals, skills they will seek to develop during this position, and professional development opportunities that will support them in achieving those goals. Along with all other members of the lab group, the research assistant will create a strategic plan at the beginning of each spring, summer, and fall, share key goals from their plan with the full lab group, and meet individually with PI Palevsky to discuss their plan to ensure that the job expectations and the individual’s personal goals remain aligned.

B.A. or B.S. in a STEM field

• Highly motivated, able to work independently, and in a team environment

• Strong enthusiasm for developing new skills and expertise 

• Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
