The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a Research Assistant  who will coordinate and implement research activities of the Neurosurgery Functional lab. Under the supervision of a faculty investigator, Dr. William Anderson.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Data Analysis/ Data Management:

  • Setup and maintain studies.
  • Conduct data analysis as needed.
  • Maintain HIPAA-compliant participant database.
  • Maintain data archives.
  • Organize files.
  • Assist in experimental design and implementation.

General Lab Administration:

  • Participate with PI on design and implementation of standard operating procedures.
  • Attend and take notes at lab meetings.
  • Supervise undergraduate research assistants.
  • Liaise between administrative office as necessary.
  • Order supplies and maintain equipment as necessary; review invoices and statements and shipments for correctness.

Work with Research Participants:

  • Aid in recruitment efforts and consenting of research participants.
  • Aid in scheduling research participants.
  • Assist with conducting phone and in-person screenings.
  • Coordinate participant visits, collect data, maintain records and regulatory documentation.

Protocol Management:

  • Assist PI on developing IRB protocols.
  • Liaise between lab and IRB.
  • Prepare all necessary forms and paperwork related to research protocols.
  • Under direction from PI, prepare and submit any Adverse and Serious Adverse Event Reports to IRB.

Grant Writing:

  • Participate with PI on grant applications, non-competing renewals, and progress reports.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff regarding grant submissions, as necessary.

 Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Starting Salary Range: $16.42 - $22.57/hr (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
