Position Summary Information


General Information
The College of Education (COE) invites applications for a 20-hour-per-week Research Assistant who will collaborate with JMU faculty in COE and with collaborators at UVA and ODU. The research assistant’s efforts will contribute to a 4-VA funded research project examining the role of a teaching simulator on pre-service teacher preparation.
This position will begin working in August 2023 with a one-academic-year contract (i.e., through May 2024). This position is a 20 hour per week commitment. While most hours will be between 9am-6pm, the role will include occasional evening obligations.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assist the research team with the design and implementation of teaching simulation scenarios, and with the collection and analysis of data from the design and implementation stages of the project.
2. Collaborate with the project team as a co-author/co-presenter in disseminating research data; contribute to literature review, presentation development, and publication development.
3. Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

· Experience and/or willingness to develop skill engaging in quantitative and qualitative research. · Excellent communication, interpersonal, and listening skills. · Excellent writing skills. · A friendly and professional demeanor. · Motivation and curiosity, time-management skills, and ability to take initiative and be independently productive. · Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Preferred but not required: · Experience working in public schools (e.g., student teacher, classroom teacher, teaching assistant) · Experience serving as a point of contact for research and/or other collaborative projects · Experience collecting and analyzing human subjects research data · Experience and/or willingness to develop skill using programming languages (e.g., HTML and JavaScript)
Conditions of Employment
Students may apply to a graduate assistantship prior to being accepted into a graduate program. However, to be eligible to receive an assistantship upon entry into a graduate program, the following criteria must be met:
  • The student must be conditionally or unconditionally accepted into a graduate program. Students who are provisionally accepted will not be eligible until they achieve conditional or unconditional acceptance into their program.

  • The students must have an official transcript on file indicating completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution or agency

  • After receiving an assistantship, the student must maintain at least a 3.0 graduate GPA in order to retain or reapply for the assistantship.

These are minimum criteria. Graduate program coordinators have the right to impose additional criteria if they see fit.
