The Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (DGHSM) at Harvard Medical School conducts research to constantly improve the practice of medicine, the delivery of treatment, and the development of health care policies locally and worldwide. Researchers at DGHSM have a long history of conducting research on tuberculosis, focusing on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB. The department is seeking a strong applicant for the position of research assistant for a new multi-national research project on tuberculosis treatment outcomes currently being conducted in Lima, Peru and Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia. Reporting to the Project PI, a senior member of the faculty, the research assistant will serve as a liaison with the various institutional review boards involved in the study, develop and document the study's standard operating procedures, train research teams in both countries to ensure harmonization of procedures, and coordinate with the database managers on developing data management systems and tools.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage IRB protocol development, submissions, amendments and progress reports in conjunction with local research teams in Peru and Mongolia. Develop protocols and monitor study activities to ensure compliance with protocols and with all relevant institutional review and human subjects protection policies.
  • Develop educational materials to inform potential study participants or caregivers about study aspects and outcomes to be expected and work with local teams to translate these materials to local languages and contexts.
  • Develop SOPs and train research teams in study procedures. Prepare study-related documentation such as protocol worksheets, procedural manuals, standard operating procedures, institutional review board documents, and progress reports. Participate in the development of study protocols including guidelines for administration or data collection procedures. Develop and implement training modules for various aspects of study implementation including study procedures, data collection, laboratory activities, data management, and quality control. Instruct research staff in scientific and procedural aspects of studies. Identify protocol problems, inform investigators of problems, or assist in problem resolution efforts such as protocol revisions.
  • Database development and management. Work with database managers in both sites and in Boston to develop databases, data dictionaries, enrollment and retention reports, data quality monitoring systems and systems to maintain required records of study activities.
  • Laboratory management. Work with microbiology and other laboratories to develop systems to process and transport study samples and report laboratory findings. Develop and communicate protocols for the collection, labeling, processing, storage, or tracking shipment of specimens. Order supplies and equipment necessary for study completion and arrange transport of samples/supplies as needed.
  • Schedule and coordinate site visits for the PI and Boston based staff with local teams. Assist with planning and coordinating annual workshops and meetings with teams.
  • Prepare for or participate in quality assurance audits conducted by study sponsors, federal agencies, or specially designated review groups.
  • Collaborate with investigators to prepare presentations or reports of clinical study procedures, results, and conclusions.

This is a one-year term position with strong potential for renewal.

Two or more years of related work experience. A Bachelor's Degree in related field may count towards experience. Demonstrated knowledge of research populations and/or techniques is required. Knowledge of standard research methods and statistical techniques required.
MPH preferred. Strong experience in study management, preferably in low or middle-income countries. Previous experience with IRBs, database management, protocol development, training research teams and coordinating studies involving laboratory procedures. Strong references from supervisors who have lead research studies preferably in a low or middle-income country. Outstanding organizational and communication skills. Strong writing skills. Able and willing to travel to either Peru and/or Mongolia 4-5 times a year. 3 years of previous research management experience in a low or middle-income country. Fluent in Spanish and/or Mongolian (lower levels of language proficiency are not an asset for this position). Russian also helpful. Some knowledge or previous work with tuberculosis. Exposure to applicable computer technologies, including specific software applications is required. Appropriate communications skills required.
