About the role: 

We are seeking a talented, creative, and enthusiastic individual to join our community as a Research Assistant III. Reporting to the Senior Scientist, you will contribute to the discovery of novel classes of therapeutics using human cerebral organoids. You will work within a highly collaborative team of academic and industrial engineers, biologists, and bioinformaticians focused on therapeutics discovery and development, supporting the discovery of therapeutics for neurological disorders, in particular bipolar disorder. This position offers an exciting opportunity to learn a broad spectrum of skills while pursuing challenging biological questions with clear commercialization potential.


Position Description

What you’ll do:

  • Culture induced pluripotent stem cells, as well as generate and maintain various 2D and 3D  cell cultures
  • Independently with guidance from senior staff, conduct FACS (fluorescence activated cell sorting), multi-electrode array-based assays, molecular assays,  sample preparation for proteomics and transcriptomics sequencing and microscopy imaging. 
  • Assist senior staff with implementing and applying several novel model systems, including engineered human iPSC-derived brain organoids to screen drugs predicted using machine learning for efficacy in bipolar disorder models.
  • Contribute to the design, execution, and analysis of experiments in collaboration with bioinformatics and engineering teams in a fast-paced, team-focused environment. 
  • Contribute to internal reports, patent applications, presentations, and publications under the guidance of senior staff. 
  • Assist with the maintenance and procurement of equipment and supplies relating to tissue culture, microscopy, sequencing, and experimentation. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.

Basic Qualifications

What you'll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, biological/biomedical engineering, pharmacology or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a lab environment. Education may count towards years of experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Desirable Skills:

  • Tissue culture experience, particularly with induced pluripotent stem cells, is required.
  • Tissue modeling of human disease is a plus.
  • Experience performing immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy and ImageJ, is a plus.
  • Experience performing FACS and proteomics, is a plus.
  • Experience with Matlab is a plus.

Work Format Details

This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
