Position Summary

The Tiemann Laboratory at Michigan State University is seeking a highly motivated individual to lead/support research efforts.

Basic Duties Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Design and plan laboratory research experiments, based on planed research methodology and updates/adapts procedures for conducting the lab experiments that contribute to meeting project goals
  • Oversees and coordinates research conducted and laboratory/ field operations in order to meet national standards and maintain and/or continue grant funding.
  • Performs experimental tests and assays and records and analyzes results in order to provide conclusive data for research projects.
  • Plans research methodology and develops, adapts and updates procedures in order to design research experiments that contribute to meeting project goals.
  • Supervises and reviews the work of student employees 
  • Assists in preparing and editing reports, articles and manuscripts for publication; participates in presentations.
  • Maintains materials, methods and records of experimental procedures and evaluations of data accumulated.
  • Performs all field work in order to run experiments.
  • Establishes and implements quality control procedures and ensures compliance with federal guidelines.
  • Researches current literature in order to determine the most economical, efficient and productive research methods.
  • Assists in the design and implementation of computer handling systems.
  • Collects and organizes materials/patients for experiments and research studies.
  • Designs, builds, calibrates, tests and operates laboratory instruments in order to ensure compliance with specifications and to meet project needs.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or related science field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in overseeing research projects and laboratory operations, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and difficult analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.


Desired Qualifications

Master of Science Degree in soil science, soil chemistry, chemistry or related science field

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Experience working with spectrophotometric data and building statistical models
  • Advanced interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Advanced knowledge of machine learning and multivariate statistical methods and strong experience in use of R and related statistical packages for implementing these analyses.
