Position Summary

Hiring a lab manager for the Tsao Lab in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife to oversee general laboratory maintenance, lab personnel, and to assist with ongoing research projects related to research, outreach, and teaching efforts to reduce the risk of vector-borne disease, with an emphasis on tick-borne disease.

Duties will include: 

  • Oversee general laboratory maintenance to maintain a safe and functional laboratory.
  • Create and maintain organization of laboratory and field supplies, reagents, and equipment.
  • Properly store, organize, inventory and dispose of laboratory specimens, reagents, and supplies and hazardous waste.
  • Order, operate and maintain laboratory/field equipment, including repairs to facilitate efficient laboratory/field function.
  • Perform, develop, and optimize nucleic acid extractions and laboratory assays.
  • Reserve field vehicles and oversee maintenance and mileage records.
  • Assist with writing and submitting applications for permits including sample collection and land use; applications for animal use and human research; safety protocols; and reports to management agencies, landowners, and regulatory bodies.
  • Submit position descriptions, interview, hire, train, and supervise staff and students to ensure the quality and quantity of work produced.
  • Interact with other laboratory personnel regarding sharing of specimens/reagents/equipment, clarifying tasks, and identifying and solving problems.
  • Assist in research and surveillance projects as needed, including active surveillance for ticks, conducting field experiments, and coordinating passive surveillance networks.
  • Assist with outreach activities and events.
  • Assist with teaching and training in both formal (e.g., veterinary clerkship) and informal (e.g., local health department personnel) instruction.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or related science field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in overseeing research projects and laboratory operations, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and difficult analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.


Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree in entomology.
  • Experience maintaining laboratory safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience conducting surveillance for invasive arthropods as well as with conducting behavior experiments.
  • Experience with taxonomic identification of arthropods using morphological dichotomous keys.
  • Laboratory experience in using molecular diagnostic approaches to assay for pathogens and/or identify arthropod species.
  • Experience with supervising undergraduates, masters of public health students or veterinary students. 
  • Experience with managing projects, databases, and associated budgets.
  • Experience with pesticide handling and use.
  • Strong communication skills and experience with conducting outreach with a diversity of people.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and proven track record of working well with others to accomplish desired goals and objectives.
  • A self-starter who has strong organizational skills and pays attention to detail.
  • A desire to learn new techniques and approaches and to pursue professional development.
