Position Description


The HMS Center for Bioethics brings together the rich intellectual resources of the medical school faculty with health professionals and scientists from our affiliated teaching hospitals, departments across Harvard, and colleagues from other institutions worldwide to ensure that scientific progress, medical therapeutics, and health care practices proceed hand-in-hand with a reflection about the profound moral questions raised by advances in the life sciences. Our mission is to use these resources to execute our vision in teaching, service, and scholarship.

The Center for Bioethics at Harvard Medical School is hiring a full-time research assistant with a strong background or interest in qualitative methods and/or bioethics to work in NIH-funded studies on the ethical, clinical and legal implications of emerging technologies in neuroscience and genomics.


The research assistant will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Gabriel Lazaro-Munoz, PhD, JD. Under the nominal direction of the PI, responsibilities include project planning, ensuring study protocols are followed, data collection, management and analysis, and assistance writing manuscripts and presentations.


Basic Qualifications

One year of related research experience in social sciences, neuroscience, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, bioethics or related field required.  A Bachelor's degree may count towards experience.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Education Preferred: bachelor's degree in social sciences, philosophy, bioethics or related field. Experience in project coordination, research and/or qualitative interviewing.
  • Demonstrated analytical and written communication skills, including proficiency in scientific writing.
  • Ability to display a professional, positive attitude with strong interpersonal skills and communication skills required and must be able to work independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, efficient, and strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of flexibility in accepting work assignments with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks, understand processes, and resolve issues.

Additional Information

This is a 12-month term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.

This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
