Position Summary
The Michigan State University Exposure Science Laboratory, housed in the College of Human Medicine, is seeking a highly motivated research assistant to oversee and coordinate several research projects which investigate exposure reductions of environmental toxicants (such as air pollution) and health outcomes via interventions. The research assistant will work with investigators and students from interdisciplinary fields to conduct various chemical analyses, set up and maintain equipment and supplies, collect and process research data, and assist in planning and designing laboratory experiments and field work. Oversees laboratory/field needs and orders materials, supplies and equipment. Main research activities include (1) conducting lead exposure assessment tasks among children and their families, and (2) assisting in performing lead chemical and data analyses and publishing/presenting data. This is an off dated position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in environmental health sciences, public health, or the physical sciences/engineering; or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.
Desired Qualifications
A Master’s degree in the physical sciences/engineering, or one to two years of related work experience using analytical techniques and instruments in a wet-laboratory setting. Experience and knowledge in human subjects research. Demonstrated ability to learn new methodologies and follow laboratory standard operating procedures. Motivated to initiate and complete tasks independently and have reliable work habits. Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and attention to detail.
