Position Summary

The Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health at Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine are seeking a Research Assistant for the NIH/NIMH-funded Mentoring and Peer Support (MAPS) and MOthers AdvocateS in the Community (MOSAIC) projects. The MAPS study focuses on developing and pilot-testing lay provider-delivered peer navigation intervention for individuals with serious mental illness reentering the community after jail incarceration. The MOSAIC study aims to develop a mentor mother provided intervention for pregnant women and mothers with children under the age of 5 who also report mental health challenges.
The research assistant will recruit, screen, consent, assess, track and follow up with participants from Genesee County Jail, the YWCA-Flint and other local agencies serving the study population. The study research assistant will enter data into the SPSS and manage its transfer to a secure server. The RA will be responsible for tracking participants and conducting follow-up interviews by phone or in-person. The research assistant will work under the supervision of the study PI, Dr. Maji Debena. This position is located in Flint, Michigan.

Identified areas of need include research to address barriers to creating linkages to community mental health, medical care and substance use services during a vulnerable period of transition. 


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

The job requires: knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.


Desired Qualifications

Masters degree in public health or related fields.Experience working with population under the study (incarcerated individuals, pregnant and postpartum women, people with mental health disorders and people in crisis); the ability to troubleshoot and analyze problems and excellent communications, interpersonal and organizational skills are essential; experience working independently, commitment to maintaining confidentiality and strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Word. Completion of human subject training and certification (online program) prior to contact with participants or data.
