Job Summary
The Hopkins Lab within the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University seeks a Research Assistant I to assist with molecular biology and evolutionary genetics research. Our lab investigates the fundamental evolutionary forces driving adaptation and speciation. We utilize a variety of population genetic, molecular evolution, and genomic techniques to study selection, gene flow, and adaptive mutations in plants. We also do extensive experimental work with plants grown in the greenhouse and field settings. Much of our work focuses on characterizing the mechanisms of selection and the genetic basis of trait variation involved in speciation and adaptation.
Position Description
This position will involve assisting senior researchers with a variety of laboratory tasks including:
- Extraction of DNA and RNA.
- Next-generation and third-generation sequencing library preparation.
- PCR and gel electrophoresis.
- Cloning, subcloning, and cell culturing.

- Working collaboratively with senior scientists on design, planning, and optimization of experiments.
- Plant care and propagation.
- Plant measurements and trait quantification.
Basic Qualifications
Some college background in life sciences required. 1 year of experience in a lab setting with experience in basic laboratory techniques (course work may count toward experience).
