Job Overview

The Division of Research of Hoxworth Blood Center is searching for a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual for our Basic Research Laboratory. The candidate will assist in the execution of basic molecular, biochemical and cell biological experiments in the area of hematology and cancer biology. The candidate will make independent contribution to the project and studies. The candidate will be a part of Dr. Ramesh Nayak’s laboratory at Hoxworth Blood Center and will work under the supervision of Dr. Nayak.   


Essential Functions
  • Perform molecular biology experiments including genomic DNA isolation, plasmid isolation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), quantitative real time PCR, gene cloning into expression vector.
  • Perform cell biological and biochemical experiments including cell culture, generation of retroviruses and lentiviruses, protein quantification assay, SDS-PAGE and western blot, isolation of murine bone marrow cells, murine peripheral blood, immunostaining and flow cytometric analyses of murine bone marrow and peripheral blood.
  • Assist in animal colony management and animal husbandry. 
  • Maintain records of laboratory inventory and place orders in order to keep the laboratory well stocked with supplies and reagents.
  • Contribute effectively to the collective team effort. 
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory testing and experiments. Analyze data, perform statistical and graphical analysis of data, and interpret results. Author material for reports, journal articles, and abstracts.
  • Strong time management, organizational, effective problem solving, and multi-tasking skills are required. 
  • Good communication and teamwork skills are required.

Required Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

Experience in molecular and cell biological techniques including DNA isolation, PCR, SDS-PAGE, western blots and cell culture will be given preference. Applicants with previous experience in immunostaining and flow cytometry are encouraged to apply.
