Position Summary
The Research Assistant in the Knight Campus at the University of Oregon requires an individual who is self-motivated and has excellent organizational and communication skills to oversee the technical aspects of the Hettiaratchi lab on a daily basis. Additionally, the Research Assistant will work closely with Assistant Professor Marian Hettiaratchi and her project leads to design, implement, and supervise lab research, and participate in a variety of new and ongoing research in the lab as directed.
The Hettiaratchi lab applies principles in chemistry, molecular biology, chemical engineering, and biomedical engineering to develop new biomaterials for protein delivery to repair injured tissues in the body. The Research Assistant will play a key role in the discovery and research functions of the lab. The scientific/research duties of the Research Assistant can be tailored to the candidate’s previous experience and current interests to some extent.
The position reports to Assistant Professor Hettiaratchi.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in science relevant to the laboratory (biology, chemistry, physics, engineering)
• 1 year of relevant experience in a research environment
Professional Competencies
• Demonstrated organizational skills
• Experience in a regulated, research environment
• Demonstrated technical skills relevant to cell culture, polymer chemistry, and/or molecular biology
• Strong team ethic
• Attention to detail
• Demonstrated skills in written and interpersonal communication
Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree in Engineering, Bioengineering, Biology, Chemistry or Physics
• Demonstrated organizational skills related to lab project management.
• Co-authorship on publications and/or presentations on work done in a previous research environment.
• Experience in animal work and research regulated by IACUC and AALAC (American Association for Laboratory Animal Care) regulations
