The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (GWU SMHS) is located in Washington, DC. One key focus of the GWU SMHS is to perform clinical translational research for neglected tropical diseases. Our goal is to examine the utility of repurposing therapies for use in viral diseases such as dengue, zika, chikungunya and COVID.
Located at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Research Assistant will assist the Principal Investigator (PI) with the clinical trials at GW and in Barranquilla, Colombia. This research support position contributes to research/development by assisting with experiments in a controlled laboratory setting. The core responsibilities of this position include assisting with data collection and administration of experimental procedures and assisting with administrative aspects of preparing manuscripts for publication. This position may perform some lab maintenance duties as a secondary function. This role typically works under immediate supervision, and the primary job functions do not require exercising independent judgment. This person will generate different reports from the data management system REDCap and assist with human samples of clinical trials of experimental therapies for infectious diseases and their complications that may include chikungunya, dengue, and Zika. This role supports the Colombian clinical site in the daily operations of the clinical trials including staff, REDCap database reporting and quality control.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Assists the PI with the day-to-day report generation from REDCap in English and Spanish.
  • Assists the PI in the development of a quality system integrating all clinical trial functions and data reporting in REDCap.
  • Assists the PI with the tracking of the project and study timelines in program management software, Mondays.com.
  • Assists the PI with the compilation and analysis of clinical trial data and the day-to-day coordination of study participants visits and procedures related to ongoing studies.
  • Serves as the liaison with all appropriate research units (e.g., Clinical Immunology Laboratories at GW and at Colombian partner sites that may include the Global Disease Research Foundation Colombia, Universidad Libre and Clinica de la Costa) to assist the PI with the conduct of the trials in English and Spanish.
  • Assists the PI with the research methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives.
  • Assists the PI with the sample biobanking, human sample shipping and with the protein assays.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong understanding of Human Subjects Protections, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines, and relevant regulatory requirements in Colombia and United States.
  • Excellent communication skills, including complete proficiency in written and spoken English and Spanish.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel Word, PowerPoint, and REDCap.
  • Knowledge of Medical terminology and clinical trials.
  • Prefer Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP or Society of Clinical Research Associates SOCRA) certification. ACRP certification can be completed at George Washington university during employment as well.
  • Clinical laboratory competency for biobanking and cytokine multiplexing.
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
