Research Assistant, Department of Oncology - Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center - Georgetown University

Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center , part of Georgetown University Medical Center , seeks to prevent, treat and cure cancers by linking scientific discovery, expert and compassionate patient care, quality education and partnership with the community guided by the principle of cura personalis - “care for the whole person.”

Job Overview

The Research Assistant provides support for a basic science laboratory focusing on pediatric cancers, with the overall goal of discovering and developing new therapies for children with cancer. Most experiments include molecular biology and cellular biology techniques – and also use in vivo cancer models.


Work Interactions

Under the direct supervision of the Lab’s Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant works in very close coordination with other members of the research team, which includes undergraduate students, graduate students, other research assistants and postdoctoral fellows.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, and/or related field – preference for a Master’s degree Experience in laboratory research [note: consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience]
  • Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to use a consultative approach to resolve issues in area of responsibility
  • Ability to perform research in a laboratory setting, working with independence for all routine procedures
  • Ability to lead certain research activities and to perform various advanced procedures
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint toward assisting in the preparation of technical procedures and reports
  • Ability to maintain good record keeping and to show ability to learn new techniques

Preferred qualifications

  • High proficiency in performing the above listed skills and therefore requiring little training
  • Experience with small animal cancer models

If necessary, the candidate selected for hire must complete training in occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
