Job Overview

The Research Assistant uses advanced metabolomic tools for developing small molecule quantitation assays, preparation and analysis of biological samples for mass spectrometric analysis for supporting DoD (IARPA) funded project with a goal of developing MS based biomarker assays. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Receive work instructions to analyze data, design, and develop methodologies necessary for accurate knowledge discovery. 
  • Participate on teleconferences to discuss experimental design with project collaborators for scientific coordination and data reporting on a periodic basis.
  • Assist with successful completion of milestones as laid out in the grant, wherein the work includes optimization of MS sample preparation, developing small molecule quantitation assays, and designing MRM assays in accordance with GLP (Good Laboratory practices).
  • Determine assay precision and accuracy and generate raw data on LC/MS instruments, perform Pre- and Post-processing the data using algebraic and statistical calculations in Excel and R and various software’s viz. XCMS, MetaboAnalyst, as well as database searches of metabolomic biomarkers in METLIN, LIPIDMAPS, HMDB, MMCD, generations of technical reports
  • Schedules Mass spectrometry instrument operations and maintenance, performs data backup on a UIS drive, maintains laboratory in compliance with safety procedures, and administers general laboratory upkeep that includes autoclaving, scheduling waste disposal, and update of chemical inventory
  • Perform validation studies using molecular and cellular biology techniques; and process and integrate high dimensional data generated using multi-omics approaches

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Under the supervision of Dr. Amrita K Cheema, the Research Assistant uses advanced metabolomic and lipidomic tools for the preparation and analysis of metabolomics data. They receive work instructions to analyze data, design, and develop methodologies necessary for accurate knowledge discovery.

As well, they work closely with the team members in the laboratory and assist them with day-to- day laboratory wet and dry laboratory related functions.

This position has been designated as On Campus. Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master's degree in Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Computational biology or related field – preference for a doctoral degree
  • Expertise in laboratory techniques, including but not limited to sample preparation, and molecular and cellular biology techniques such as cell culture, western blots, ELISA, RTPCR, and/or extracellular vesicle isolation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative statistical analyses and tests
  • Experience in analysis of mass spectrometry data
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to multi-task
