Job Overview

The Research Assistant supports research related to understanding the significance of APOE glycosylation to Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis, using induced pluripotent stem cells to understand the significance of APOE glycosylation to APOE pathogenesis.

Work Interactions and Duties

The Research Assistant, working closely with Principal Investigator and a postdoctoral fellow, receives guidance on a day-to-day basis to facilitate the goals of the project, and interacts professionally and collegially and respectfully with all lab members, including graduate and undergraduate students, treating all lab members with respect and consideration.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Cell Studies

  • Maintain cell culture of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells
  • Perform differentiation of iPS cells
  • Stain iPS cells for microscopic analyses and flow cytometry
  • Perform immunofluorescence imaging of iPS cells

Procedures

  • Prepare samples iPS cells for analyses of a variety of biochemical analyses
  • Conduct assays, including ELISA, Western blot, protein concentration assays and binding assays
  • Prepare mass spectrometry samples

Analyses

  • Perform quantitative PCR analyses of iPS cells
  • Prepare and run genotyping analyses

Lab Support

  • Order lab supplies
  • Perform routine lab maintenance, such as refilling cell culture disposals, weekly safety checks
  • Perform autoclaving and disposing of cell culture waste
  • Participate in weekly lab meeting and project meetings

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science or science related field
  • At least 1 year of experience in a laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of basic cell biology and physiology

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with tissue culture
  • Any experience with biochemical or cell-based assays, and molecular biology techniques such as PCR
