Research Assistant, Data Science – Tepper School of Business

Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business is searching for a Research Assistant to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing support by being a part of an interdisciplinary project led by Pierre Liang. The project goal is to create a basic framework of Business Language Analysis (BLA) which exploit the fundamental properties of accounting rules imposed on the practice of business language in formal documents such as Form 10-K for publicly traded companies. These fundamental language rules impose, for example, a double-entry bookkeeping structure leading to a graph representation of accounting data. Also imposed are rules on accounting texts written in natural language but obeying regulatory disclosure requirements in both substance and form.

This position is designed to operate with 5-10 working hours per week.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Convert financial disclosures in numbers into graph datasets and analyze graphs using network packages in Python.

  • Convert financial disclosure in text into NLP datasets and analyze using standard NLP packages.

  • Apply and fine tune existing statistical/econometric models through experimentation.

  • Read both data science and business/economics literature and collaborate with scholars of diverse backgrounds.

  • Other duties as assigned

You should demonstrate:

  • Fundamental grasp of basic NLP principles and tools and related research experience

  • Fundamental grasp of basic network analysis principles and tools and related research experience

  • Fundamental grasp of basic statistics/econometrics principles and tools and related research experience

  • Strong programming/coding skills in Matlab, Python and R.

  • Prior experience working with field professionals in the intersection of accounting/finance and machine learning such as graph representation of financial data and textual analysis of financial texts.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • 3-5 years of data collection and/or analysis experience required

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
