A Research Assistant position is currently available for employment beginning in May, June, or July 2017 in the lab of Dr. Tom Cunningham at the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine, in the Department of Cancer & Cell Biology, to study the molecular mechanisms that contribute to cancer development. The employee will have the opportunity to utilize in house state-of-the-art facilities to conduct cutting-edge research with the intention of publishing their results in pre-eminent peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Cell or Nature.

 

Primary job duties include :   Performing wet-lab experiments utilizing western blot analysis, RNA isolation, PCR, tissue culture, mouse genotyping, immunohistochemistry, molecular cloning and mouse dissection, to name a few. Secondary duties include: laboratory organization, aiding and training other lab members, maintaining mammalian cell cultures, preparing buffers and reagents, ordering, and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. An estimated 90% of time will be committed to primary job duties (experiments), whereas only 10% will be spent performing secondary duties (maintenance/organization).

 

Minimum Qualifications :  B.A or B.S in relevant fields such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, biophysics, etc. A minimum GPA of 3.5. Previous independent laboratory experience outside of required courses is mandatory . Ability to comprehend and critique published articles, and can work well independently or with other members of the lab. A minimum two year commitment is required, but deference will be given to candidates who can commit to three years. Candidates with extensive prior experience (>3-5 years) or graduate degree may be considered if the candidate’s qualifications are exemplary.

 

Preferred qualifications :  Experience in mice handling and proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe, Photoshop, and Illustrator is preferred. Proficiency in Python, R, or other programming languages is an added bonus.

 

Responsibilities and technical expertise : The employee will work very closely with, and receive direct training from Dr. Cunningham, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and clinical fellows within the lab.
