Job Description:

Summary:

The Research Assistant position will focus on assisting the laboratory with making progress toward its experimental goals. The Research Assistant will conduct research, record, analyze, interpret data, and coordinate manuscript preparation. This position is expected to work closely with the PI, graduate students, and postdocs to assist in their projects as needed. The Research Assistant will also be responsible for placing orders, lab organization, as well as coordinating IACUC protocol submission and assisting with animal colony management.


The Chellappa lab is interested in understanding the interactions between the host and microbiome in driving cellular metabolism and host phenotypes in aging and age-related diseases. The lab uses a range of techniques, including 16S sequencing, metagenomics, metabolomics, CRISPR screens, bacterial work, cell culture, and mouse models. The mission of the lab is to train next-generation scientists to conduct rigorous research and equip them with skill sets to advance their careers.


This is a fixed-term position with a current end date of 5/31/2026, which may be extended based on available funding.

Job Qualifications :


Grade 7
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree with prior related experience or extensive coursework required

  • And/or the equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Experience in biochemistry, chemistry, or mass spectrometry with an interest in wet lab research is preferred

  • Excellent organizational, record-keeping, task prioritization, and report preparation skills

  • Outstanding problem-solving skills, ability to implement solutions

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficiency with computers and essential software programs (e.g. MS Office, R Studio etc.)

  • Ability to collect and analyze data

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a diverse group of people, with vastly different skills and training

  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community

Grade 8
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 1-2 years of experience required

  • And/or, the equivalent combination of education and experience

  • A background in molecular biology/ biochemistry or chemistry with an interest in wet lab research is preferred.

  • Research experience in molecular biology/ cell culture/ animal work is preferred.

  • Experience in liquid chromatography and/ or mass spectrometry is preferred.
