Job Description:

The primary purpose of this position is to help the lab make progress toward its experimental goals. This work will focus on understanding the mechanism controlling host-virus interactions in cells and animals, such as how the host controls viral infection and how viruses counteract against the host immune system. The goal is to identify novel cellular genes/molecules to cure and to prevent infectious diseases caused by viruses. This work will rely on a mouse model with a variety of knock-out and knock-in mouse lines to investigate viral pathogenesis, and a cell culture model to discover novel anti-viral or pro-viral cellular genes. To achieve these goals the research assistant will provide technical assistance, coordinate laboratory research according to established laboratory protocols, and supervise and train lab aids.

Job Qualifications:

  • Education: Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or related science.
  • Technical: Must have basic knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of molecular biology and cell culture. Experience within the field of Microbiology preferred but not required. Must be willing to work with mildly infectious organisms. Writing is an integral part of the research process and as a result strong written communication skills are critical for success in this position.
  • Some familiarity working with mice is preferred.
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Organizational: Must see to maintenance and organization of laboratory research activities.
  • Interpersonal: Must interact well with other laboratory personnel, with members of the University
  • community, and with outside vendors.
