Research Assistant and Technician

• Prepare materials and supplies needed for conducting field/greenhouse/laboratory experiments focusing on plant, soil, and water microbiology in soil-based and soilless (hydroponic and aquaponics) production systems.
• Periodically adjusts and updates structural/operational elements of three high tunnels.
• Conduct analyses to characterize soil health microbial indicators and key production system factors of growth/survival of bacterial/fungal pathogens.
• Prepare field & high tunnel soil plots.
• Install electronic sensors & controllers connected to/interfaced with the physical structure and moving parts of the high tunnels.
• Implement regular maintenance (structural & vegetative) inside/surrounding high tunnels, in support of plant production research.
• Apply research treatments, sampling of soils, plants, and produce from plots.
• Prepare sterile media.
• Conduct soil physical, chemical, and microbiological analyses (pH, electrical conductivity, extractions for soil health/nutrient analyses, and microbiome studies).
• Record data accurately & preparation of data summaries, tables, and data reports.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• B.S. Degree in Biological Sciences, including classwork and experience preferred in plant science, microbiology, biochemistry, and ecology.
• Must have at least 5 years combined laboratory, greenhouse, high tunnel, and field plot research experience.
• Experience in selection, repair, and installation of specialized plastic film covering for high tunnels and in designing/installing insect screening periodically on high tunnels.
• Must have experience in use of specialized tools appropriate to these activities.

• Must be adaptable to working in a variety of lab, field, and collaborative personnel situations to include indoors and outside.
• Knowledge and Experience applying safe practices in a research environment and appropriate for worker and environmental protection from chemical and biological harm.
