Research Assistant - Agricultural and Environmental Sciences

Job Summary

The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources is seeking a Research Assistant in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. This position will supervise all field research for the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment (HEE) at project sites in Southern Indiana. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

 

  • Serving as the taxonomic expert for at least one of the species groups studied as part of the HEE, and be familiar with all
  • Assisting in training tree, small mammal, salamander, bird, and understory plant survey skills
  • Coordinating activities of all field crews, both of Purdue and of other collaborating institutions 
  • Independently collecting data on various taxa throughout the year 
  • Maintaining all facilities at project sites
  • Entering data, conducting preliminary analyses, and assisting in writing extension and scientific publications 
  • Maintaining research equipment and accessing to research sites
  • Frequently giving field tours and extension presentations of the HEE project to local, state and regional audiences
  • Frequently traveling between Purdue's West Lafayette campus and project sites

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s in Biology, Wildlife, Forestry or Natural Resources
  • 1 year of research and/or data collection in field ecology setting
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to recommend minor changes in systems and processes to solve problems to improve effectiveness of area
  • Frequent travel between Purdue's West Lafayette campus and project sites

 

Preferred:

  • Master's degree
