Position Focus:

The Yale Bone Center Mineral Metabolism Laboratory is one of several clinical laboratories in the Yale Medical School accredited by the College of American Pathology, and CLIA certified by the Connecticut Department of Health to perform laboratory testing for diagnostic purposes. It is part of the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Endocrinology. This position, under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Dr. Karl Insogna and the direct daily supervision of the Laboratory Manager, will assist in analyzing clinical blood samples for vitamin D metabolites and parathyroid hormone levels for diagnostic purposes. This includes participating in sample extraction, preparation and storage, and reporting patient results in a laboratory information system. Duties also include running and maintaining analytical instrumentation, assisting the Laboratory Manager in the daily measurement of vitamin D metabolites and parathyroid hormone, and trouble-shooting assay instrumentation and assay methodology and performance issues when necessary. Candidate must also maintain quality control logbooks and communicate any problems to the laboratory manager.


Essential Duties

1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for research projects. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques. 2. Modifies and plans research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments. Assists in research design. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation. Reports on status of research activities. 3. Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Sets up, operates, and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. Modifies equipment according to experimental specifications. 4. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May monitor hazardous work areas and laboratory safety. Prepares related reports. May prepare financial information and monitor budgets. 5. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.


Required Education and Experience

Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Strong work ethic and excellent attendance record with outstanding precision and attention to detail in performing all basic laboratory techniques including repetitive pipetting, using precision balances, and preparing solutions of different molalities. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills with excellent English communication skills.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Clinical laboratory/research experience doing repetitive immunoassays with various methodologies like multichannel auto-analyzers and performing radioimmunoassays. While not required, familiarity with EPIC or related EHR, strongly preferred.


Preferred Licenses or Certifications:

bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
