POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under the general supervision, assist with daily operations of the laboratory and perform research work in rodent imaging research. This position will work with animals.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plan and carry out in vivo imaging experiments for various research projects using rodent models of normal and diseased conditions.  Studies include but are not limited in vivo MRI and PET scans. (30%)
  • Coordinate and perform animal handling/surgical procedures for imaging experiments, including performing cannulation procedures, injecting imaging tracers, and creating disease models. Ensure procedures meet the requirements of the Animal Resource Center, IACUC, and other facilities at the university. (30%)
  • Assist in developing imaging techniques and modifying experimental procedures for improved imaging quality and scan throughput. (10%)
  • Assisting in collecting and analyzing imaging data with a focus on monitoring, recording, and analyzing physiological functions, such as body temperature, breathing patterns and heart rate, during in vivo imaging experiments. (10%)
  • Collaborate with research investigators from many departments including biomedical engineering, radiology, neuroscience, physiology, genetics, and pharmacology on collaborative imaging experiments. (10%)

  • Maintain lab equipment, including microscope, stereotactic systems, infusion pumps, and surgical instruments. Maintain supply inventory and place orders. (5%)
  • Train new staff and students regarding standard laboratory policies. (5%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (%)

    CONTACTS

    Department: Daily contact with supervisor and lab members to discuss research and maintain workflow.

    University: Occasional contact with other departments to collaborate on research projects.

    External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information.

    Students: Daily contact with student employees to conduct experiments and explain policies and procedures.

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. Train new staff; directs the work of students.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and experience: Bachelor's degree and 1 to 3 years of related experience in preclinical research or Associate's degree in physics, engineering or related science and 2 to 4 years of experience.

     

    REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of neuroimaging.
  • Must demonstrates compliance with university animal research and care (ARC) policies and procedures and compliance to regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
  • Must demonstrate compassion for animals within CWRU facilities and dedication to the Animal Resource Center’s mission.  Must handle animals with care and respect at all times.
  • Must be able and willing to maintain a high standard of personal cleanliness and utilize protective gear to protect the health the animals.
  • Previous experience working with animals preferred.
  • Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  • Significant communication skills and ability to work among diverse teams, perform as a team player, and has the ability to demonstrate maturity. 
  • Good organizational and lab operation skills, ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to assimilate and integrate background knowledge and new understanding to new aid successful completion of new projects.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to coordinate work on several ongoing projects
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
  • Prefer basic understanding of imaging methods.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Case Western Reserve University's animal facilities are accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and is managed according to the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” appropriate Federal Animal Welfare Regulations, and the Public Health Service “Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals." This position, and all animal research personnel, are subject to internal compliance to medical school Animal Resource Center Standard Operating Procedures and to compliance regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines, the State of Ohio Veterinary Practice Act, Federal Drug Enforcement Administration regulatory guidelines, US Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine regulations and other applicable regulatory guidelines.

     

    This position is eligible for hybrid work arrangement up to two remote days per week at the discretion of the department. New employees may begin a hybrid schedule upon approval from the supervisor, successful completion of an orientation period and signing the remote work checklist certification form.
