The Division of Infectious Disease and Global Public Health within the Department of Medicine at UCSD aims to conduct high-caliber research on health related issues and service utilization facing populations in international settings, U.S. minorities and migrants to the U.S. The Division promotes research, teaching, service and global health leadership based on the principles of social justice and health equity.The Division also promotes the development of equal bi-national partnerships with UCSD, other academic institutions and non-governmental organizations.

Under the supervision of the principal investigator, the incumbent will participate in a range of data collection activities for a research study involving individuals who have just been released from the Los Angeles County Jail system.

The study has two components, a brief cross-sectional survey to be conducted with approximately 4,000 individuals as they leave jail, and a sub-sample of 400 individuals who will be periodically interviewed by phone in the 12 months after their release.

Job duties for this position include: 1) as part of a team of interviewers, conducting in-person recruitment and survey administration in street settings immediately outside the Inmate Reception Center (IRC, located in central Los Angeles) and Century Regional Detention Facility (CRDF, located in south Los Angeles); 2) as part of a team of interviewers, conducting in-person recruitment of eligible cross-sectional survey participants into a longitudinal cohort, and conducting baseline survey administration in street settings immediately outside the IRC and CRDF; 3) as part of a team of interviewers, conducting followup interviews and study visits by phone with cohort participants; and 4) other administrative support for the study as required.

• Ability to work one-on-one comfortably and respectfully with recently incarcerated individuals

• Ability to comply with confidentiality and human subjects requirements in the context of medical/public health research.

• Experience working independently in field settings with minimal supervision.

• Knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices.

• Experience conducting working in collaboration with community based organizations.

• Ability to exercise judgment about the appropriateness of responses to ensure survey protocols.

• Experience working independently in field settings with minimal supervision.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Ability to work effectively and productively as part of an academic research team.
