Position Focus:

Under the supervision of a Principal Investigator and higher-level staff, this full-time position will oversee the management of the laboratory’s mouse colony and assist in the daily operations and laboratory procedures performed in the laboratory. 

Essential duties include but are not limited to: Breeding, providing husbandry support to, and managing a mouse research colony. Maintaining associated records to ensure compliance with IACUC and YARC regulations. Assisting with bacterial infections and dissections of research mice, including the preparation of tissue samples for histological analyses and the enumeration of bacterial colony-forming units. Managing special treatments such as the administration of treated water or drugs. Assisting with body-weight measurements and fecal collection; Maintaining laboratory inventory of supplies, reagents, and equipment.  Ordering supplies for laboratory personnel.  Shipping/receiving of specialized laboratory reagents to/from other labs. Assisting in minor clerical tasks associated with research projects. Performing additional responsibilities incidental to laboratory activities. Maintaining laboratory compliance with biological and chemical safety regulations. Ensuring laboratory bio-safety and other pertinent procedures and protocols are up to date. Assisting with molecular biology and biochemistry techniques related to laboratory research projects including PCR, molecular cloning, RNA/DNA isolation, and recombinant protein expression and purification. Interacting with external vendors, equipment maintenance crew, IACUC and YARC, as well as internal EHS personnel as lab contact person.


Essential Duties

1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/ scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. 3. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. 4. Formulates and prepares scientific solutions and media. Recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. 5. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May oversee and instruct research staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.


Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Excellent communication/interpersonal skills. Accuracy and attention to detail.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Mouse handling and colony management skills Proven ability to use common lab equipment including but not limited to: PCR machine, centrifuge, spectrophotometer, pH meter, electrophoresis equipment, bacterial incubator, microbalance, various imaging and analysis instruments


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to prepare reagents, buffers, bacterial culture media, and other reaction mixtures. Familiarity with culturing, genetically transforming, and analyzing BSL 1 and/or BSL 2 bacterial species.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Basic computer skills and familiarity with statistical analysis. Proven attendance record.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Preferred experience with mouse breeding, infections, dissections, and colony management; PCR/molecular biology; recombinant protein production and purification; basic bacteriology skills including sterile technique. Coursework in microbiology and biochemistry is desirable.
