Position Focus:

The Research Assistant will be working at Yale Medical School (SHM/ YPI). Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, he/she will assist in and support research projects. Projects investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms of higher cognition, such as decision making, complex learning and reasoning in non-human primates (NHP).  The responsibilities of RA in assistance of research includes Animal (non-human primates, NHP) care in compliance with research protocol and USDA-regulations: Pre-, peri- and post-operational care. Daily health monitoring and routine care. Inspecting and keeping records (e.g. medical, husbandry, controlled substance and research records). Assistance of NHP surgery: Prepare sterile surgery. Maintain, prepare and clean up surgical tools, equipment and OR/Procedure rooms. Research assistance: Independent behavioral training of NHPs. Assistance for neurophysiology including (but not limited to) sterile packs, animal set up, and maintenance of sterile recording chamber. Assistance for viral injection and histological analysis for optogenetic/chemogenetic experiments. Order, track and organize research supplies. Assistance of new personnel for NHP training.


Essential Duties

1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/ scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. 3. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. 4. Formulates and prepares scientific solutions and media. Recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. 5. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May oversee and instruct research staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.


Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Physical and mental strength to train/work with/handle non-human primates.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to understand and comply with SOPs and research protocols of the laboratory, as well as DEA, IACUC and USDA-regulations.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to understand the fundamentals and purposes of each step of the assigned task, and to identify and solve problems independently.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to communicate/discuss the problems encountered while performing the assigned task with supervisor and/or lab members.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to follow up all the parts of an assigned task until the task is complete.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences, behavioral neuroscience, psychology, or related fields. At least one year of research experience in the laboratories using animal models.
