Position Focus:

The incumbent will be a Research Assistant for multiple studies, focusing particularly on program evaluation for the Headache Center of Excellence (HCoE) program which is part of the VA HSR&D funded PRIME Center. Requiring limited supervision, ability to multitask, and exercising sound independent judgment and initiative, the prospective candidate will provide a high level of assistance to the HCoE leadership in coordinating the recruitment, clinical interviewing, data collection, data management, reporting and as well as administrative aspects of studies and the program.  Specific duties entail: Is responsible for a range of scheduling activities, specifically scheduling patient screening interviews, various assessment activities, outpatient treatment appointments, follow-up evaluation appointments and so forth. The incumbent coordinates the use of space assigned to the study. Is responsible for arranging travel and scheduling for the site visits. Is responsible for scheduling staff calls and meetings among the investigators, project staff, and advisory committee. Is responsible for taking detailed meeting minutes. Managing and updating Teams Boards daily. The incumbent will coordinate with providers regarding the delivery and dissemination of educational materials, creating state process maps, and data entry. The incumbent is independently involved in all aspects of data collection from start to finish of a study; including recruitment, selection, consenting, and assessment of study participants. Organizes, manages, and records data in data base using computer. Merges new data with existing files and creates sub-files as they are needed. The incumbent manages multiple human research protocols for both the VA and Yale University. Includes but not limited to initial approvals, amendments, and reapprovals. Is responsible for creating and maintaining all administrative files for the research projects including local ethics review board documents and submissions. The incumbent has responsibility for the creation of complex database systems (MS Access and/or REDCap) for multiple studies. Is responsible for coordination of data collection procedures on a daily basis. The incumbent will collect, organize, and review all data collected by other research associates and assistants to ensure their completeness and accuracy. Is responsible for the coding of data on data sheets and for entering data into the extensively detailed computer data bases. Is independently responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the data base. The incumbent conducts computer assisted reporting. Is responsible for assisting the HCoE leadership and the other research associates in development of new study treatment and assessment materials. The incumbent participates in design and implementation of clinical research studies and maintains responsibility for project coordination. This position is located at the VA Campus..


Essential Duties

1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. 3. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. 4. Recruits study participants and ensures that subject recruitment and follow-up are completed per protocol procedures. 5. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May assist research and support staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.


Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Research - Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Computer Skills - Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work. Ability to be proficient in Excel and reference software (preferably ENDNote).


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Database Management - Knowledge of the uses of database management systems and software to control the organization, storage, retrieval, security, and integrity of data.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree. Ability to conduct statistical analysis using statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, R, etc. Knowledge of SQL.
