Description of Work Unit
At the CSU VTH, we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community…every day. This work unit exists to provide anesthesia support for research projects, continuing education laboratories, and client owned animals undergoing MRI, CT, and surgery.
Position Summary
The technician monitors physiological parameters, assesses physiological status related to anesthesia and surgery, and provides life- saving measures as indicated by the individual patient. This position also exists to provide routine to extensive emergency medical treatment to sustain the patient throughout the procedure and into the recovery period. This position will provide anesthesia for many non-recovery procedures requiring humane euthanasia while under anesthesia.
Minimum Qualifications
To qualify or this position, candidates must demonstrate:
  • An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology AND
  • Two full-time years of experience assisting in animal surgery, administering anesthesia to animals and/or performing veterinary surgery.

Duty/Responsibility
• Implements appropriate anesthetic regimes for routine to critical cases management for various species of animals undergoing anesthesia for research purposes. 
• Provide Leadership 
• Safely anesthetizes, instruments, and monitors patients for research projects. Must be proficient in various species in venous and arterial catheterization, intubation, instrumenting, evaluating anesthetic depth, recovering, and providing proper pain management. 
• Decision maker in emergency situations. 
• Evaluates patient and completes a safe anesthetic plan based on physical, objective, subjective, and history. 
• Pre-medicates, induces, and maintains general anesthesia whenever necessary. 
• Strives to provide state of the art patient management throughout the perioperative phases. 
• Provides approved and safely handling of controlled substances (i.e. morphine, ketamine, etc.). Complies with DEA laws and appropriate documentation of controlled substances on a daily basis. 
• Interacts with veterinarians seeking continuing education for Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching hospital. 
• Set-up CE laboratories, anesthetizes and monitors patients, stocks, and cleans laboratory. 
• Provide humane euthanize in terminal research studies. 
• Cross trained to support all areas of anesthesia (SA & LA clinical cases, Research, and CE labs)

• Maintains anesthesia equipment, making sure all equipment is in great working order.
