Job Description

This primary role of this position is to plan daily observations for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) at the Science Operations Center (SOC), for both the Narrow Angle Camera nominal instrument operation, and process daily delivery of science and supporting data files from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Mission Operations Center (MOC). LROC daily operations are time critical to ensure proper uplink and instrument operations. This role will also assist with a variety of research and data analysis projects, and will perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range

$42,000 - $60,000 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Perform observation planning for the LROC NAC and WAC instrument and submit those plans to the LRO Mission Operations Center (MOC) for uplink to spacecraft.
  • Interact with the LRO MOC and other LRO instrument teams to negotiate observation time when conflicts arise.
  • Work with Principal Investigator and the LROC Science Team to ensure mission goals, as they relate to acquisition and processing of images, are being met.
  • Perform daily data processing tasks to convert incoming instrument science files into NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) archive products.
  • Monitor real-time and stored instrument telemetry to generate base-line performance plots to ensure nominal instrument operations.
  • Generate statistics from instrument and data processing operations to ensure optimal and timely delivery of SOC generated products. 
  • Generate new or update existing documentation that describes operational and data processing procedures.
  • Generate daily, weekly and monthly reports as needed. 
  • Assist with a variety of research and data analysis projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator or Science Operations Center Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field related to area of assignment AND one year of related experience; OR, Any equivalency combination of education and or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with operation of a remote sensing instrument (camera, spectrometer, radar, etc).
  • Demonstrated working knowledge in the use of Linux and MacOS X operating system for data analysis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scripting languages: Ruby, Python, bash, awk, sed. 
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of any remotely sensed image processing software package: JMars, ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI/IDL, ISIS3, etc. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in identifying and resolving problems.

Working Environment

  • Sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Use computers effectively including inputting, reviewing and retrieving information, extended periods of viewing screen and using mouse and keyboard.
  • Work in an office setting and use office equipment (e.g. printers, copiers, fax machines, telephones).
  • Open and shared office space.
