Position Overview

The Fragile X Research Lab is seeking a full-time (40 hours per week) Research Aide to assist with data collection in homes of research participants who live in various states across the country, to administer standardized tests and protocols to adolescents with fragile X syndrome, and to code video-taped mother-child interactions for behaviors.

Job Description

35% – Code individual behaviors during videotaped mother/child interactions using Noldus, a behavior coding software.

35% – Travel with a colleague to study participants’ homes across the country to collect data; this involves administering standardized tests of language and cognition, standardized protocols of narrative abilities, and video-taping mother-child interactions. Weekend travel needs vary month to month.

15% – Transcribe mother’s and child’s conversation and code for grammatical categories using the Systematic Analysis for Language Transcripts (SALT) software.

10% – Maintain databases to support data collection and analyses.

3% – Score standardized tests of language, cognition, and adaptive behavior.

2% – Attend meetings with PIs and other lab members.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology, child development, psychology, or related field.
  • Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail, as evidenced by the quality of application materials and writing sample.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel as evidenced by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with observational coding programs such as Noldus Observer, Multi-Option Observation System for Experimental Studies (MOOSES), or Observational Data Coding System (ODCS) as evidenced in application materials.
  • Previous experience with transcription and coding of language samples for grammatical features as evidenced in application materials.
  • Experience with children with communication delays and/or challenging behaviors.
  • Interest in fragile X syndrome.
