Description

 

Responsible for analyzing complex financial information and performing a variety of accounting duties associated with the timely and accurate preparation and reporting of sponsored project financial data, In accordance with applicable accounting standards, Industry regulatory and Institutional principles and policies.

  • Analyzes complex award document terms and conditions, budget, and sponsor specific guidelines for financial reporting requirement; including but not limited to billing and reporting requirements, and spending restrictions.
  • Responsible for the setup and review of accounts within the finance system to ensure financial terms are recorded with appropriate key attributes; prepares journals entries to inactivate sponsored project cost center at award close-out and cost transfers; prepares vouchers for refunds.
  • Provides guidance and training for the Research Accountants 1; responds to inquiries from Department Administrators and Principal Investigators (PI) regarding financial data, allowable cost, sponsors restrictions and limitations; collaborates with PIs and department administrators to ensure accurate and timely processing of financial reports.
  • Reconciles liability and revenue account entries to identify and monitor payment, non-payment, shortages and write-offs; analyzes and reconciles expenditures posted to sponsored project cost centers to identify errors or discrepancies; monitors and reconcile facilities and administrative (F&A) charges and fringe benefit posted to sponsored project cost centers.
  • Reviews Letter of Credit (LOC) expenses in project costing for federal draw-down to take place.
  • Prepares complex financial reports requiring data using several data sources and complex formulas; monitor budget variance and communicates with sponsors and responsible staff members about prior approvals, no-cost extensions, and other changes affecting the award budget.
  • Generates invoices for sponsored research projects and follow-up for payments; contacts sponsors on outstanding accounts receivables and past due invoices; determines when additional action is required to ensure payment.

    Qualifications

     

    Research Accountant 1: Bachelor's and 1 year of experience. 
    Research Accountant II: Bachelor's and 3 years of experience. 
    Research Accountant III: Bachelor's and 5 years of experience. 

    Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience.
