THE DEPARTMENT
This position is located within the Reprographics Department of the Graphic & Distribution Services unit Procurement & Support Services Department, which is responsible for providing a vast array of publications reproduction, design, and records management support programs to the campus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads the Reprographics staff in their performance of complex, technical and/or specialized work requiring extensive advanced knowledge and expertise.
  • All work requires a broad and specialized knowledge base of reprographics, offset and digital printing, pre-press, large format poster printing and copying. Thorough knowledge of PC computers, digital printing and copy systems, proofers, CTP, and equipment used in printing required. Ensure setup of projects is accurate for press/copy runs, operate, and maintain digital and offset presses and copy equipment with speed, accuracy and precision producing a wide range of color publications requiring hairline registration.
  • Perform an array of pre-press functions associated with the offset/digital pre-press section that includes but is not limited to preflight, platemaking, color proofing, creating bleeds, spreads and chokes and mispositioning to meet appropriate printing and bindery production requirements.
  • Rule out printed sheet, compare against proof, making sure all corrections have been made and receive color approval from client approved proofs. Accurately estimate production time and quantities of materials necessary for given projects, organize, prioritize, schedule and structure multiple work tasks concurrently.
  • Monitor inventory of stock, supplies and inks to ensure availability as work is assigned. Work effectively and demonstrate currency of publishing services. Provide necessary adjustments on equipment and perform maintenance as required. Trains staff on operation of equipment and printing procedures.
  • Incumbent operates and maintains a variety of digitally networked printer/copier equipment producing a wide range of black and white and full color publications.
  • Accurately estimates production time and quantities of materials necessary for given projects, organize, pricing, prioritize, schedule and structure multiple work tasks concurrently.
  • Work effectively and demonstrate currency of knowledge with advanced technology utilized in providing high quality reproduction publishing services.
  • Review complex and diverse print orders and manage each print job from start to finish, including file preparation, printing, scanning, and file management, using digital plan room tools, coordinating projects with other departments, and providing bindery services. Maintain inventories and coordination of supplies and materials.
  • Coordinate shipping and delivery of finished products; ensuring safety and quality control; repair of equipment; scheduling student workers; uses and maintains Department software used for job estimating, pricing, and billing; etc.
  • Incumbent adjusts and operates assorted bindery equipment and performs complex bindery paper finishing processes to include but not be limited to; machine and hand paper folding; machine and hand collating; punching and binding; sequential digital numbering and variable data; paper scoring; perforating; paper drilling and cutting; other materials necessary for given projects; organize, prioritize, schedule and structure multiple work tasks concurrently.
  • Work effectively and demonstrate currency of knowledge with advanced technology utilized in providing high-quality reproduction publishing services.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid CA driver's license.
  • Possess specialized skills as well as a broad knowledge of reprographics operations, processes, and systems. Proficiency in applicable PC and Macintosh platforms, their operating systems and applicable software packages.

Working knowledge of desktop publishing and graphic software and the ability to manipulate and translate media, as well as process electronic files using pre-press software. Thorough knowledge of campus graphics standards and procedures. Requires a thorough knowledge of lithography and reprographics systems and operations. Ability to set up and operate high speed copiers (black & white and color), digital presses and/or multi-color offset presses to produce high quality work. Thorough knowledge of mixing and matching ink, manipulating color values, and ensuring even density on the sheet and consistent color throughout the job using applicable equipment. Thorough knowledge of applicable U.S. Postal Service requirements and processes related to standard and automated mailing processes and other shipping and receiving methods. Effective communication and customer service skills including the ability to advise customers on print needs and effectively work with designers to find creative solutions to provide products that satisfy requirements established by the customer and designer. Satisfactorily resolve customer complaints. Effective organizational skills to coordinate work within a specified area within reprographics and to provide lead work direction to other staff and students. Ability to effectively manage priorities in a fast paced and changing environment. If assigned, ability to provide lead work direction to lower level. Reprographics Specialists and student assistants. Working knowledge of department administrative procedures including job estimating, pricing, and billing, reprographics budget procedures and related administrative functions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of training or coursework in printing or related areas
  • The ability to lead staff in their daily functions of reprographics work.
  • The ability to read, write, interpret, and follow verbal and written instructions. The ability to make calculations for paper, ink, and costing.
  • The ability to function successfully in a team environment and be able to assume independent responsibility for multiple assignments amid numerous distractions.
  • The ability to schedule and lead others and coordinate the volume of work.
  • The ability to respond to and assist clients as needed. Knowledge of pricing and job rates for projects.
  • The ability to plan and coordinate a large number of diverse, concurrent activities. The ability to operate wide format poster printers with a variety of substrates; mount and add grommets.
  • The ability to prepare materials for production, including graphics manipulation and limited graphic design work.
  • Thorough knowledge of the operation, adjustment and routine maintenance of mechanical, digital, and computerized equipment and system. Offset and digital press, bindery and large format printing experience required.
  • The ability to operate prepress/proofing software and equipment.
  • The ability to perform periodic inspections of printed pieces during the production run for registration and color quality.
  • The ability problem solves, paying special attention to detail and projects specifications.
  • The ability to analyze and adjust graphic arts reproduction equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • The ability to pixel copies projects, provide cost and time estimates
  • The ability to provide training to reprographic specialists and students assistants.
  • The ability to perform routine and special maintenance on equipment as required or ensure optimal machine performance based on equipment specifications and manufacturer's recommended schedules
  • The ability and manual dexterity to operate graphic arts reproduction equipment safely and efficiently
  • The ability to set up, run and monitor bindery equipment Lifting over 50 pounds will be shared and occasional Able to stand for long periods of time
  • The ability to price copy projects
