Description of Work Unit
Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.
The Office of Vice President for Research (OVPR) Division encompasses 15 departments that support the research enterprise at the university. Research IT analyzes, designs, recommends, installs, configures, troubleshoots, maintains, administers, and supports a Windows-based local area network and computers used by the OVPR Division. The Office has grown recently by adding Research Computing and Cyberinfrastructure and Research Data Security as new researcher service areas to their portfolio. This is a dynamically growing area that is focused on not only supporting administrative functions of the research administration at CSU, but also in collaborating and delivering innovative services in research computing and technology to the varied research projects and initiatives across the institution.
Position Summary
Develop and support reporting solutions integral to the administration of Colorado State University’s $498M+ research enterprise. This role includes the following functions: data modeling, interactive report/dashboard development, application support, and faculty/staff training and support.
This position will support multiple reports, dashboards, and applications used by college/department business officers, research administrators, and faculty. The supported applications and reports are critical to the administrative, business process, and communications needs of the research mission for the university.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (Computer Information Systems (CIS), Computer Science (CS), or other related degree) or high school graduation/GED and equivalent demonstrated IT experience
  • 1 year experience developing data models, reports, and dashboards using Power BI or similar data modeling/reporting tool
  • Proficiency in using SQL for querying databases or data sources
  • Demonstrated Effective communication skills to understand business requirements and present findings.
  • Demonstrated Problem Solving: Critical thinking to solve complex data-related challenges.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Proficiency (2+ years recent experience) with PowerBI including designing data models, creating datasets, interactive dashboards, and reports
  • Proficiency with using DAX and Power Query for data manipulation, extraction and transformation within Power BI
  • Previous information technology (IT) role in Higher Education
  • Experience with Kuali Research and/or Kuali Finance software
  • Previous experience with reporting tools such as Pentaho, Sisense, BIRT (Business Intelligence Reporting Tool)
  • Previous experience with ETL tools/process development incorporating diverse data sources such as databases, cloud services and APIs
  • Experience with NoSQL database
  • Experience with ITSM
  • Programming experience using C#, Java, .NET, HTML, JavaScript, PL-SQL, or Typescript
  • Proficiency using Oracle, MySQL, or other relational database management system (RDBMS)
  • Continuous learning mindset and willingness to stay up-to-date with evolving technology and best practices in data reporting, analytics and platform architecture.

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility
  • Develop custom data reports and dashboards using  various reporting tools (e.g., Power BI, BIRT, Sisense) or direct SQL 
  • Provide University data to Federal agencies, sponsors, and other stakeholders 
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for University data contained in multiple databases 
  • Develop and maintain custom ETL processes, including current in-house developed solutions and common tools (e.g., Pentaho, Boomi) 
  • Work directly with database administrators constructing scripts, tables, database –views, and schemas for research data needs 
  • Migrate legacy in-house ASP.Net applications as needed to Power BI
