Since the 1893 World Columbian Exposition, our organization has aimed to connect people to the natural environment and human history.

The Repatriation Specialist assists the NAGPRA Director in maintaining compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the Field Museum's Repatriation Policy. This two-year term position is responsible for conducting research, engaging in consultation, and processing repatriation requests. Additionally, the Repatriation Specialist will contribute to the structural development of the newly established Center for Repatriation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Consults with Native American Tribes and other Indigenous communities regarding repatriation and information requests
  • Conducts collections-based research, including examination of archives, investigation into provenience and provenance, and consultation with community experts
  • Maintains accurate records of all activities, including collections research, correspondence, consultations, notices, inventories, summaries, and determinations regarding collections and repatriation
  • Drafts and submits NAGPRA documents, including summaries, inventories, and Notices
  • Presents requests and updates to the Museum's Repatriation Subcommittee

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in Anthropology or a related field; museum or related research experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous cultural concerns and the ability to work in collaboration with Indigenous peoples successfully on issues related to repatriation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain respectful working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, tasks, and deadlines
  • Excellent research and writing skills, with the ability to synthesize and clearly present complex information
