Position Description
The Religion and Public Life Government Fellow will join a cohort of Fellows who will work closely with the Faculty Director at RPL, other HDS faculty, and staff colleagues to enhance the Certificate in Religion and Public Life (CRPL) that is available to students in our two largest master’s degree programs. The 2022-2023 Fellowship cohort will be made up of 10 expert practitioners representing particular professions (government, education, journalism, organizing, and media and entertainment) and issues (racial justice, climate change, refugee and immigration rights, and Native and Indigenous rights.)
Responsibilities:
1) Approximately 10 hours of preparatory work this summer, including two one-hour webinar meetings with the RLPI Fellowship cohort;
2) co-teaching the Religious Literacy and the Professions fall course with Dr. Moore and other Fellows. This includes running your own weekly 60-minute section for 8 weeks in the Fall 2022 semester focused on government policy and practice, responding to all student work related to your section, and helping students construct their final projects for the course;
3) being available to mentor students during office hours for two hours each week at a time of your choosing during the fall term, and as requested by students during the spring term.
4) developing resources (case studies, best practices, policy papers, etc.) for government professionals that highlight the utility and application of religious literacy to enhance public policy.
4) working with the RPL staff to identify and broker internship opportunities related to government for HDS students; and
5) participating in a public symposium in the spring on Religious Literacy and the Professions with other Fellows, date TBD.
Basic Qualifications
The successful candidate will have significant experience working in government (local, state, federal, or inter-governmental levels) and/or on development and implementation of policy. Background in religious studies is not necessary, but curiosity to explore how religious literacy can enhance effective government policy and practice in pursuit of justice is required. Experience teaching is a plus.
