Job Summary

The Clinical Research Nurse works collaboratively with the Medical Director of the NCRU, NCRU Nurse Manager, Principal Investigators, and research staff to conduct study procedures per protocol.

The position is variable 50 - 100 percent.

Department Description

The UCSF Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is a dynamic multidisciplinary clinical and translational research program investigating neurodegenerative diseases. Our research focuses on understanding the best predictive factors and earliest causative changes in neurodegenerative disorders.


Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Geriatric Nursing and a minimum of three 3 years of clinical experience.
  • Demonstrated competence in the following areas: phlebotomy, medication administration, EKG, medication administration (i.e. IV therapy, IM, SQ injections), excellent communication skills, leadership/problem identification/resolution, precise documentation, and teaching of patients, families, staff and colleagues.
  • Two (2) years RN experience in neurology clinical research (i.e. FDA clinical trials experience) including administration of investigational medication.
  • Recent experience (within the last year) administering Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR).
  • One (1) year RN experience working with patients who have neurodegenerative disease, including Alzheimer’s disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, frontotemporal dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease.
  • Two (2) years experience administering contrast agent for MRI.
  • Ability to assist geriatric patients and those with movement disorders for transfers, toileting, ambulating and at least 1 year experience performing these duties.
  • One (1) year of phlebotomy experience, including elderly patients with difficult draws.
  • Highly skilled and demonstrated experience at placing peripheral IVs in elderly patients and those with difficult venous access.
  • Ability to develop therapeutic relationships with patients with behavioral and cognitive disorders and their families.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently as a nurse and exercising independent clinical judgment.
  • Ability to escalate significant adverse changes or clinical findings through appropriate chain of command.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks with competing deadlines in a fast paced environment.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Competence in the use of PC compatible software including MS Office, proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of University guidelines, IRB/CHR requirements.

License/Certification

  • Current California RN License.
  • Current AHA BLS.
  • Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) Certification.
  • Documented training and certification for Good Clinical Practice (GCP) through CITI Program or equivalent.
  • Human Subjects Protection Training Certification.
