This job opening is a Decentralized Float RN position working in the multiple specialty clinics at Brighton Center for Specialty Care including but not limited to: oncology services and adult urology.


The Brighton Center for Specialty Care is the newest University of Michigan Ambulatory Care facility dedicated to providing high quality health care services for adults and children.  The new 2-story facility is located at 7500 Challis Rd. Responsibilities*
  • Provide nursing care in multiple specialty clinics at Brighton Center for Specialty Care. 
  • Provide nursing care in collaboration with physicians, other disciplines, and department colleagues for patients in clinic and via telephone to support efficient and effective management of patients.
  • Participate in the coordination of care, including testing, medication management, collaborative planning of care, support of self-management by patients/families, management of emergency situations, etc.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care.  Work with the physicians to develop and carry out clinical standards of care for various patient diagnoses.  
  • Provide patient and family education e.g., self-injection, medication management, and disease management.
  • Provide telephone triage, patient teaching, direct patient care, documentation with follow-up and coordination with ancillary services and related departments.  
  • Provide functional supervision to allied health staff.  
  • Assist with patient flow as necessary and appropriate.  
  • Candidate must be able to perform duties independently, be highly motivated and flexible in order to address the needs of patients and their families.  
  • Candidate will need to be familiar with internal and external resources for clinical assessment, decision making, and care management.

Nursing Specific Info

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position. Posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period. Applicants who have left the UMPNC bargaining unit must include on their resume dates of past employment including months and years of service along with effort. Positions less than 20 hours/week may be combined.

Required Qualifications*
  • Current Licensure to practice nursing in the State of Michigan.  
  • Two (2) years of RN experience

Desired Qualifications*
  • Ambulatory Care RN experience
  • Experience in oncology and/or urology
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, problem solve, delegate effectively and to work with minimal supervision.  
  • Demonstrated excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills in daily practice: assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of care. 
  • Demonstrated ability to promote and maintain professional, collegial, collaborative relationships within a multidisciplinary team. 
  • Demonstrated skill to organize and manage multiple interventions simultaneously with an ability to understand acuity and urgency in decision making and prioritization. 
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve in a collaborative manner. 
  • Must be self-directed and flexible with an ability to prioritize and work autonomously 
  • Demonstrated efficiency in time management, reprioritizing and managing a fast-paced patient care environment utilizing acuity and urgency as predictors. 
  • Demonstrated accountability and dependability. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and customer service skills as demonstrated through previous performance evaluations. 
  • Basic computer skills. 
  • Clinical certification
  • BSN 
  • Experience coordinating care for patients with complex medical conditions 
  • Experience with lab monitoring for patients on immunosuppressive medications.  
  • Leadership as demonstrated by professional activities, charge nurse, project work, etc.

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hrs/wk with variable start times with potential evenings and weekend days with expansion of the site
Shift/Days/Hours: Monday thru Friday, may be required to work Saturdays with expansion of the site

Location: Brighton Center for Specialty Care

Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
