Job Description


Founded in 1967, Blue Ridge Community College has served the residents of the central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia for over 50 years. Its comprehensive program of instruction includes associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates in occupational/technical and college/university transfer programs. The College also provides non-credit workforce training and special interest classes for individuals, business, and industry.
Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline/field of study to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include a variety of formats: face to face, remote, and online. Teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment.

  • Teach specific classes with sound goals and methods in mind, utilizing the entire class period
  • Participate in the planning of each learning experience
  • Develop syllabi and instructional materials
  • Ensure course objectives are met to the specifications of the Virginia Board of Nursing
  • Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of BRCC and the VCCS

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

  • Ability to work with groups of varying ages, backgrounds and skills level
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate complex subjects in a clear and engaging way
  • Ability to use instructional technology
  • Must be a self-starter and innovative thinker
  • Must be a Registered Nurse licensed to practice in Virginia with two years’ experience
  • Hold a current unrestricted license in Virginia or a multistate licensure privilege
  • Minimum one-year of experience in the provision of long-term care services
  • Hold, or obtain prior to teaching, a Nurse Aide Instructor Training certificate acceptable to the Virginia Board of Nursing, and renew training every 3 years

  • Experience teaching in classroom, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency.

  • Experience teaching in Higher Education
  • Experience in curriculum design and development
  • AHA BLS HeartSaver instructor a plus
