Position overview

The Reference & Instruction Librarian for Languages Cultures serves as liaison to selected humanities departments, and helps carry out the mission of the Reference & Instruction department and Gould Library to support the teaching and learning goals of the college. The Reference and Instruction Librarian for Languages and Cultures provides one-on-one instruction at the Research/IT desk, in research consultations, and during information literacy instruction sessions in a manner that supports the curriculum and mission of the college. The Librarian actively participates in campus initiatives and is involved in the campus intellectual life. Carleton College Library is a member of Bridge, a collaborative consortium with the St. Olaf College Libraries. As a member of the Bridge Consortium, the Reference & Instruction Librarian works collaboratively with peers at the St. Olaf Libraries to provide strategic direction and services for the research needs at Carleton and St. Olaf.


Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities

  • Maintain and continuously develop subject expertise in order to provide excellent reference services to faculty, students, and staff

  • Actively engage and provide outreach to faculty to identify and meet students’ information literacy needs

  • Provide information literacy instruction

  • Provide individual and group student research consultations

  • Participate in general reference responsibilities in person, on the phone, through email, video chat, and text chat at the Research/IT help desk. 

  • Create and maintain course, subject, and general online research guides

  • Develop and maintain a reference collection that meets the research needs of the students, regardless of publication format

  • Work collaboratively with Reference and Instruction department colleagues on analysis of student writing portfolios for departmental Information Literacy in Student Writing (ILSW) project

  • Collaborate with the Academic Support Center to provide information literacy training for writing assistants

  • Collaborate with other academic units on campus, including the Academic Support Center and Academic Technology, to provide curricular and research support for faculty and students

  • Collaborate with library colleagues to mentor and supervise Library Interns and Reference and Instruction interns

  • As part of the College and Gould Library IDE efforts, develop and maintain relationships with campus partners in co-curricular, residential life, and service-learning programs 

  • Serve on various library, Bridge, and campus committees as needed

  • Other duties as assigned


Education/Experience/Skills (supported by job duties)

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program, or currently enrolled in an ALA accredited Library program

  • Teaching experience that can be applied to information literacy instruction

  • Experience providing reference services

  • Demonstrated understanding of issues and trends in reference services and information literacy

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Academic library experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in humanities or area studies

  • Knowledge of one or more languages beyond English

  • Familiarity with electronic bibliographic management systems such as Zotero

  • Experience working in collaboration with faculty to deliver information literacy instruction 

  • Recent ALA graduates will be considered, experience in teaching related to information literacy instruction or reference services are a plus
