The purpose of the Recycling Specialist position is to support the Recycling & Waste Reduction Program in an effort to increase waste diversion at UCSF so that the overall amount of material sent to landfill will be reduced. The regulated goal set by University of California Office of the President (UCOP) is for UCSF to reach zero waste by 2020. As of July 2017, the waste diversion rate at UCSF is 74%. The following tasks listed are in support of this overall effort/goal.
Under the direction of the Recycling & Waste Reduction Coordinator in the West Campus/ Facilities Services, the individual will monitor waste stream daily at UCSF campus buildings and loading docks; ensure abandoned materials are properly discarded; collect and transport scrap metal, pallets, and re-usables to staging area; deliver containers and signage to clients, providing appropriate verbal and written instructions; provide customer service, custodial recycling education via ongoing trainings, and conduct site visits to establish or improve recycling and waste reduction on the Parnassus Campus and other locations as assigned.

• High school graduation and one year of experience as a building maintenance worker, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Valid California Driver’s License
• Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations; and demonstrated mechanical aptitude
• Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing with campus departments at all levels; ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations
• Ability to educate and communicate the importance of recycling and other environmental concerns to staff, faculty, and students
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)
• Demonstrate a professional attitude in the work environment
• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and work in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to work in inclement weather conditions

• One year experience working with a recycling program or other comparable program experience
• University and/or Medical Center experience
• Able to speak Spanish (Bilingual)
• Proficiency in PowerPoint
• Valid California Driver’s License
