Position Summary
The Department of Recreational Sports is seeking a Recreational Sports Outreach and Student Initiatives Coordinator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Department of Recreational Sports (Rec Sports) is a unit of the Division of Student Affairs that is committed to equalizing student success. Rec Sports focuses on informing, engaging, educating, equipping and inspiring students as advocates for individual and community wellbeing. Rec Sports provides opportunities to enrich student development and enhance transferable skills through experiences in Rec Sports spaces, programs and services, including student employment. Rec Sports strives to promote a community where everyone belongs and thrives to contribute to a sense of community and a culture of wellbeing at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Outreach and Student Initiatives Coordinator educates current and future students about opportunities within Rec Sports to experience the value of community and wellbeing. This position coordinates student employee career development within Rec Sports. In addition to departmental student initiatives, this position provides situational leadership to identify, develop, coordinate and deliver outreach programs with Student Affairs and university partners focused on creating community for OSU students through a common experience.
This position is responsible for defining, developing, refining and facilitating a comprehensive career readiness program for Rec Sports student employees, including, but not limited to professional development, networking and recognition. This position works closely with campus partners and creates community and wellbeing experiences for the OSU student population. The Outreach and Student Initiatives Coordinator works in concert with department and campus partners to advance the goal of equalizing student success by building seamless networks to increase the sense of community at OSU. This position identifies opportunities to leverage the expertise of the Recreational Sports full time and student staff to benefit the development of the campus community. The Outreach and Student Initiatives Coordinator is a member of the Marketing and Communications area of Recreational Sports and reports to the Associate Director for Marketing and Communications.
Position Duties
40% Program Coordination
  • Refine, deliver and evolve the Rec Sports career readiness curriculum in partnership with Rec Sports functional areas, which serves as a student employment benefit to grow self­-awareness, self-efficacy and self-advocacy around transferable job skills and to enhance future employability.
  • Collaborate with OSU Career Development Centers to ensure Rec Sports student employee engagement in their program and service offerings.
  • Develop, plan, coordinate, market and implement employee development, networking, alumni and recognition events, determining event quantity and frequency.
  • Ensure accessible learning forums that enable individualized engagement and progression through multiple levels of mastery.
  • Partner with Rec Sports functional areas to ensure they incorporate career readiness tactics throughout their student staff’s employment.
  • Actively seek resources and stay current on career readiness and student development trends.
  • Create, manage and evaluate student development activities and recognition events budget.
  • Create long-term and short-term program goals to include diversity, equity and inclusion hiring and retention strategies.


25% Outreach

  • In alignment with Rec Sports priorities and values, make decisions based on the return on investment (ROI) to determine the extent and scope of Rec Sports participation and involvement in campus wide programs.
  • Identify and cultivate on-campus relationships and partnerships to promote engagement with Rec Sports facilities, programs and services through a community and wellness lens.
  • Represent and/or coordinate the representation of Rec Sports at OSU Admissions, Student Orientation, New Student Programs, Student Affairs and other university forums.
  • Liaise with campus partners to identify OSU events to participate in and that support and advance Rec Sports and Student Affairs strategic priorities.
    • Plan, coordinate, execute and evaluate the department’s participation in the identified university events including engaging Rec Sports functional areas to deliver activities and to represent Rec Sports.
  • Articulate a data-informed vision for the advancement of equalizing student success by collaborating with campus partners to ensure alignment with Division values and departmental priorities.
  • Collaborate with Rec Sports functional areas to identify and develop networking opportunities for current student employees to interact with student employee alumni.

20% Marketing and Communications
  • Lead the creation of marketing and communication materials for outreach and student initiatives programs and events in collaboration with the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications and the student marketing and communications team.
  • Manage and update the Rec Sports jobs web page with new postings.
  • Monitor and answer employment related questions from the jobs page or other Rec Sports channels and coordinate applicant response with Rec Sports functional areas and hiring managers. Specifically responsible for maintaining job related email accounts and web forms.
  • In collaboration with the Rec Sports Marketing and Communications team, manage internal Rec Sports student communication.
  • Manage and provide engaging content for Rec Sports alumni social media platforms (currently, LinkedIn and Facebook).
  • Coordinate the placement of Rec Sports digital and print materials throughout OSU physical spaces and campus partner digital screens and newsletters.
  • Manage marketing and communications projects as assigned by the Associate Director, Marketing and Communications.

10% Student Staff Supervision
  • Hires, trains, schedules, supervises, assigns work, and evaluates Outreach and Student Initiatives student personnel and practicum/internship students. Coordinates, plans, implements, and evaluates outcome-based developmental trainings and meetings for student staff.
  • Coach and mentor students with the focus of enhancing their career readiness.
  • Oversee project-based work of the student Marketing and Communications Team.

5% Department Responsibilities, Professional Development and Other Duties
  • Participates in the development of Marketing and Communications area long term and short-term strategic planning in areas of programs, personnel, department policies and budgets.
  • Represents Recreational Sports at division, university and community levels in areas such as, committee work, program development and community engagement.
  • Pursues professional development opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in human sciences, public health, business, communications, marketing, education or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge and ability in supervising, advising, training, and evaluating employees.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of developing employee personal and professional competencies.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with internal and external stakeholders in both written and oral formats.
  • The ability to prioritize workload and meet assignments while handling multiple tasks and deadlines using strong organizational, leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams and across all levels to drive results.
  • Problem-solving skills, ability to quickly learn new concepts and methodologies and navigate through ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge and ability in event management including organization, planning, implementing and evaluation.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain collaborative working partnerships with stakeholders to accomplish department goals and initiatives.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.
  • Certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED, Standard First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens/Universal Precautions within 90 days of hire.
  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in human sciences, public health, business, communications, marketing, education or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating dynamic, relevant outreach and engagement programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development and student development programs.
  • Experience creating and developing employee development programs and events that enhance employee knowledge and competencies.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The work of this position is primarily located in Corvallis, OR. Many elements of this role require in-person attendance, but there’s the possibility of a remote work agreement to allow for a hybrid work schedule. Hours are typically within the business day Monday through Friday, but that may vary and include evening and weekend hours on occasion for event execution and participation.
