Department Description

Campus Recreation is a department within the Division of Student Affairs that provides fitness, wellness and recreation programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the following: The Activities and Recreation Center (ARC), U Center, Live Well, Recreation Sports, Sports Clubs, Equestrian Center, Craft Center, Aquatics Program, Youth Programs and the UC Davis Marching Band.



Job Summary

Under general supervision, serve as the Assistant Director for Rec Sports and Adaptive Recreation with direct oversight of Rec Sports (Intramural Sports) and Adaptive Recreation within the Department of Campus Recreation. Provide support to the Associate Director and the Competitive Sports Unit. Collaborate with Assistant Director of Sport Clubs to oversee Competitive Sports program. Manage a diverse competitive and recreational program with up to 40 recreational sports activities serving more than 9000 participants. Oversee all aspects of the program including program management, supervision, risk management, student development, and field management. Manage and direct adaptive and therapeutic recreation programs within the department. Design and lead adaptive recreation training. Support staff in adapting existing and latest programs and services to provide inclusive opportunities. Assist with budget development and manage budgets for assigned programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:           

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/ training and minimum of 3 years of experience with recreational sports programming in a university, municipal, non-profit, or private setting including event management and supervision.
  • Experience officiating or training sports officials at the Intramural level.
  • Leadership and supervisory experience to select, supervise, motivate, and evaluate full time staff and student employees relative to work performance, crisis management, and peer relationships.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Knowledge of student development principles, and ability to provide student development opportunities for Rec Sports and Adaptive Sports staff.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and varied organizational levels within and outside of the University to provide exceptional customer service and oral and written communication skills to prepare concise, yet comprehensive presentations before small and large audiences.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize workload and meet work assignments, handle multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Computer and software skills in the use of Fusion, Fusion PLAY, When 2 Work, Microsoft Suite (word, excel, etc.), and Google Suite (Gmail, docs, excel, etc.).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:           

  • A master’s degree in educational administration, recreation or sport management or a related field.
  • Experience in a collegiate recreation setting.
  • Experience officiating or training sports officials at the high school and/or collegiate level
  • Experience in a therapeutic recreation environment or providing adaptive recreation programming in a university or similar setting.
  • Experience with safety and risk practices as they relate to event and facilities management for recreational and competitive sports in both indoor and outdoor facilities/locations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Knowledge of adaptive sports and/or therapeutic recreation programming principles.
