Reading Lab, Part-Time Faculty

The Reading Lab at Bellevue College is seeking a part-time faculty for the academic year 2023-2024 and 2024-2025.

Bellevue College also maintains a pool of qualified applicants interested in temporary teaching positions on a part-time basis. Positions may become available at any time and are typically filled on a quarterly basis.

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. The successful candidate is expected to work 20-30 hours per week.

Compensation is $40.18 - $49.33 per hour. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

The Academic Success Center, and all associated labs, is committed to providing high–quality educational resources for all students enrolled in credit classes at Bellevue College. We offer peer and expert assistance, providing the tools that will enable and encourage students to become independent and life-long learners.

Each individual lab or tutoring program that works together under the Academic Success Center umbrella is linked to a pedagogical vision specific to the disciplinary programs linked to them. The Math Lab works with math faculty in order to develop a pedagogical vision of how students need to be supported to succeed in math classes. The Reading and Writing labs work with English faculty in order to develop a pedagogical vision of how students need to be supported to succeed as college writers and readers. The academic tutoring program works with faculty with expertise in adult learning and pedagogy to support adults struggling in any academic content area.

Reading Lab Instructors support our diverse student population in developing the reading skills and learning the reading strategies they need to succeed in college classes. Reading Lab Instructors use pedagogical content knowledge linked to language acquisition, adult literacy, reading theory and current approaches to computer mediated language learning to guide students and help them develop literacy skills in a supportive learning community.

Instruction

  • Design and teach a total of 3 to 6 sections of English 080 and/or English 180 lab classes in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters; additional sections of English 080 and English 180 classes might be available in Summer Quarter.
  • Lead in-person and/or online workshops on reading strategies for students.
  • Follow up with customized reading workshop requests from faculty and lead some of these workshops.
  • Collaborate with other programs and services such as the library and Multicultural Services to design and lead targeted workshops. 

Lab Operations

  • Help maintain Reading Lab open hours apart from the open hours for English 080 and English 180 students.
  • Develop and maintain learning-centered lab policies so students have a consistent experience in the Reading Lab and they understand how lab policies are tied to their learning.
  • Maintain and update the Reading Lab website.
  • Maintain lab materials, supplies, and space.
  • Other administrative duties such as managing and analyzing student usage data in collaboration with the lab chair.
  • Act as a reading specialist to provide pedagogical support to faculty on campus.

Training

  • Collaborate with the lab chair and the Writing Lab faculty to train tutors.
  • Help orient new and returning lab faculty instructors.
  • Engage in training, professional development such as Reading Apprenticeship, and resource building to meet evolving needs of the Reading Lab.
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in English, TESOL, Composition Studies, Rhetoric, Literacy Education, or related field.
  • Experience tutoring or teaching adult learners.
  • Experience teaching diverse student populations: including monolingual and multilingual English speakers, individuals with disabilities, and students at diverse levels of academic preparation.
  • Experience applying adult learning theory to individual learners.
  • Experience researching new and emerging pedagogical approaches (including software) to teaching adult independent learners.
  • Experience working in a team for the specific purpose of providing a consistent, supportive, and reliable learning environment for adult learners.
  • Experience working with and/or mentoring tutors.
  • Experience using the Reading Apprenticeship framework.
  • Experience in learning, analyzing, and teaching new educational software products designed to support reading success.
