Description of Work Unit
The Energy Institute is operated under the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) at Colorado State University. The Institute builds on the long history of work in energy at CSU and is intended to foster greater collaboration among energy faculty across all eight colleges with broad access to facilities for faculty and industry partners. The Institute conducts research, education, commercialization and outreach activities for the entire CSU campus. Also, the Institute operates the Powerhouse Energy Campus, located north of the CSU main campus and provides safe, secure, and sophisticated facilities for university investigators and industry partners to collaboratively develop clean energy solutions. This position resides at the Powerhouse Energy Campus, which is an industrial working environment.

Position Summary

Hourly Rate: $18.00 – $24.00 depending on experience
We are seeking a dynamic and innovative individual to join our team as a Rapid Prototyping Lab Manager. In this role, you will play a crucial part in overseeing the day-to-day operations in the Rapid Prototyping Lab. The ideal candidate will be passionate about manufacturing components, well-versed in concept development, adept at training students, and capable of successfully planning and executing a variety of projects. The position will also take an active role in filling in and manufacturing parts when students are unavailable, ensuring continuous productivity and meeting project deadlines.
Responsibilities include:
Lab Management:
  • Supervise all operations within the Rapid Prototyping Lab, ensuring a smooth and efficient workflow.
  • Manage lab personnel, equipment, and resources effectively.
  • Maintain and optimize lab equipment, ensuring functionality and safety standards are upheld.
  • Implement and enforce protocols for lab usage, ensuring a clean, organized, and productive work environment.

Training and Mentorship:
  • Provide hands-on training and guidance to students utilizing the lab facilities.
  • Develop
  • Foster a collaborative learning environment, encouraging creativity and problem-solving skills among students.

Project Planning and Execution:
  • Collaborate with the team to understand requirements and objectives.
  • Develop Manufacturing scheduling, allocate resources efficiently, and oversee the successful execution of multiple projects simultaneously.

Manufacturing Components:
  • Lead the manufacturing process of prototype components using cutting-edge technologies and equipment available in the lab.
  • Ensure the highest quality standards in the production of parts for various projects.

Position Minimum Qualifications
  • Extensive CNC manufacturing and Prototyping including 3-d modeling and g-code creation.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience operating and programming CNC Mills and Lathes.
  • Ability to use SolidWorks, and Fusion360. Proficiency in both design and fabrication.
  • Ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously and manage time efficiently.
  • High level of computer mastery, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to mentor and guide students effectively.
  • Physical capability to lift to in excess of 50lbs on a daily basis
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Qualifications
  • BS in Engineering or training in a relevant technical field
  • Proficiency in the design and fabrication of complex sheet metal assemblies
  • Experience with electronics prototyping including reflow soldering and PCB design
  • Ability to design and 3d print quick prototypes
  • Knowledge of data acquisition systems and data collection, specifically NI hardware and LabVIEW software
  • Familiarity with HAAS next-gen controller
