What You Will Do

The Radiation Transport Applications Group (XCP-7) of the X-Computational Physics Division is seeking early career scientists for application of radiation transport modeling and simulation capabilities in support of the laboratory’s missions. We deliver high-quality analysis and understanding of neutron, gamma, proton and electron transport and analysis issues for an array of DOE missions, including stockpile stewardship, global nuclear security, criticality safety and weapon effects.

Our teams apply a wide variety of tools to model and investigate modern and historic experimental diagnostics, intrinsic radiation, radiation detection and measurement, shielding design, criticality safety, nuclear threat reduction and response, radiation health protection, nuclear weapons effects, and nuclear forensics. We are seeking candidates that have simulation and/or experimental backgrounds and interest in one or more of these topics. While most of our analysis involve the use of Monte Carlo radiation transport codes (especially MCNP and GEANT), we do value expertise with Discrete Ordinate methods. We also value experience with experiment design and radiation detection hardware, data collection, interpretation and analysis. Most staff in this group work within two or more of the above teams, and strong written and verbal communication skills are important in this group.

A successful candidate will need to clearly demonstrate the depth of experience, roles and responsibilities in previous team projects, and technical rigor.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Candidates must have a PhD, preferably in one of the technical focus areas listed above

  • Proficiency in at least one radiation transport simulation code (e.g. MCNP6, GEANT, Attila/Attila4MC, PARTISN, etc.)

  • Effective written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment

  • Ability and willingness to exhibit professional conduct in interactions with co-workers and supervisors

Desired Skills

  • Experience in modeling particle transport experiments and analysis/comparison of experimental data.

  • Working knowledge of a scripting language and/or data analysis software (e.g. Matlab, root, python, etc)

  • Working knowledge of CAD/CAE software (SpaceClaim, SolidWorks, ABAQUS, Cubit, etc)

  • An existing Q-clearance is preferred

Education Required: A Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Astrophysics, Applied Mathematics, completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.
