Security sensitive; Certified 3-Yr Driving Record and Criminal Background Check conducted on selected applicant. Hiring decision is contingent upon applicant clearing background check and driving record requirements. Candidate selected must be able to meet the security requirements of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for Unescorted Access to Certain Radioactive Material (EA-07-305).

Responsibilities

• Performs laboratory inspections and radiological surveys. Performs survey instrument calibrations and sealed source leak tests. Participates in x-ray safety program.
• Checks in and delivers RAM packages in a compliant and timely manner. Coordinates radioactive waste collection, processing, and disposal. Participates in quarterly inventory verification.
• Supports UT Radiation Safety dosimetry program, including receipt, distribution, and collection of EHS and campus area dosimetry.  Reviews dosimetry reports for unusual exposures, and verifies dosimetry is returned and analyzed in timely manner.
• Evaluates current processes and procedures, identifies program areas that need improvement. Develops and implements new processes or procedures as needed to increase efficiency, reduce errors, and decrease the risk of non-compliance.
• Produces reports and maintains detailed records of completed tasks as appropriate to demonstrate compliance. Demonstrates the ability to follow standard operating procedures and meet assigned deadlines.
• Recognizes safety concerns outside of primary area of focus: general laboratory safety, laser safety, etc.  Other general safety activities as assigned by Associate Director.  Maintains acceptable driving record as required by UT Policy: UTS157, Section 2.5.4.    

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited academic institution in engineering, a natural science, industrial hygiene, environmental science, a closely related field, or the equivalent education and experience. Working knowledge of health physics, including basic terminology and ALARA precepts. Eligible to obtain USDOT/ICAO/IATA Hazardous Material Shipper's Certification. Uses and maintains portable and laboratory equipment designed to sample, identify, monitor, and measure radiation fields and radioactive contamination. Operates University vehicles, such pickup trucks and electric carts. Uses hand and power tools. Use standard office and audio/visual equipment, as well as digital cameras. Current Class "C" Operator Driver License required. Prior to date of hire, applicant selected must provide a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) showing a driving history going back 36 months. This includes all states resided in for the past 36 months. MVR will be evaluated to determine eligibility to drive a University-owned vehicle. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. 

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering, health physics, or radiological engineering from an accredited academic institution. Two years health physics experience at an academic/research institution. Certification by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist, and 24-Hour HAZWOPER. 

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Salary Range

$46,000 + depending on qualifications

• Radioactive Materials handling.
• May be required to work in confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, extended shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• May be required to lift up to 50lbs. Often required to twist, grasp, push, pull and bend. Considerable walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and moving of heavy materials and equipment in all weather conditions.
• May be required to use of personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties.
• May be required to pass a physical examination.
• May be exposed to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels.
• May be required to operate forklifts, personnel lifts and cranes. Operate job related equipment.
• May be required to perform elevated work. Occasional work from ladders and/or scaffolds.
• May require tuberculosis screening and occasional use of a respirator.
• Participate in on-call program.

Work Shift

• 40 Hour Work Week Schedule; Monday-Friday, 08:00 AM – 05:00 PM
