Scope of Job | To develop, maintain and oversee the Radiation Safety program, as well as Laser Safety and MRI Safety and ensure compliance with all federal and state rules and regulations, including inspections, training, and incident investigations. Oversee quality assurance for all radiation safety related programs (Ionizing and Non-Ionizing radiation). Responsible for all University’s Radioactive Material licenses and registrations. |

Required Education | Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Medical Physics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or other Physical Science from an accredited college or university. |
Preferred Education | Master’s degree from an accredited university. |
Licenses/Certifications | Must be eligible to be RSO on Broad or Specific Medical License as specified in NRC 313A (RSO) entitled Radiation Safety Officer or Associate Radiation Safety Officer Training, Experience and Preceptor Attestation (10 CFR 35.57, 35.50) for use of unsealed byproduct material, the use of sealed sources for diagnosis, and manual brachytherapy. Must be eligible to be RSO on a Medical X-Ray Registration (LINAC, Mammography, Medical X-ray and Fluoroscopy Machines.) It is recommended that candidate be Board Certified from the American Board of Health Physics, American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine, American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physics. Must be familiar with Health Physics related duties associated with the use of a specialized instruments, such as PETSCAN, Linear Accelerator, Medical Radiography, Brachytherapy, Mammography and Fluoroscopy. As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s). |
Required Experience | Five (5) years of professional experience in Health Physics performing related duties associated with the use of radioactive materials, radiation producing devices, and lasers in a clinical and research environment. |

Working Conditions | Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/healthcare environment; some travel and weekend work is required. May need to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. May be exposed to radiation. |
Other | Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Must have knowledge and experience with the use of health and medical physics related equipment such as geiger counter, liquid scintillation counter, well counter and others. |
