Job Summary

As the Radiation Safety Officer, you will advise on the financial, operational and personnel activities of the Radiation Safety Section.  This position will ensure that uses of radioactive materials and radiation producing devices meet regulations and license conditions specified by Federal and State regulatory agencies.  You will serve as liaison to regulatory agencies and as a member of the University Radiation Safety Committee, and advise the director of research safety on strategic plans for the Radiation Safety Section area and plan for implementation of strategic plan.  You will establish and advise on radiation safety and operational policies, procedures, and goals.  You will also develop annual section budget and approve expenditures.  This position will serve in an advisory capacity regarding environmental health issues.

 

This position has a starting salary range of $80,000 - $100,000 annually commensurate with education and experience.

Welcome to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) at Purdue University. We serve as a consultant to the University Community for Construction Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Hazardous Materials, Industrial Hygiene, Injury Prevention, Laser Safety, Occupational Safety, and Radiation Safety. We assist in monitoring regulatory compliance with various federal, state, and university regulations involving environmental, health and safety issues. Our services include training, consultation, emergency response, and waste removal.

The Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) is EHS's strategic plan for safety at Purdue. It provides a structure to communicate environmental, health and safety issues across the organization. Working toward increased awareness, the Integrated Safety Plan provides a mechanism for safety committees, self-audits, and departmental indemnification from regulatory fines. You will support the growing research activities at Purdue and collaborate with peers among the research and instructional faculty and staff in the PUR-1 (the first fully digitalized nuclear reactor facility), the veterinary college and the veterinary hospitals, a state-of-the-art complex that provides care for the equine, farm animal and small animals. 

 

 


What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Health Physics, Industrial Hygiene, or closely related scientific field 
  • Three (3) – Five (5) years of experience in environmental health and safety 
    • Or
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Industrial Hygiene, or closely related scientific field
  • Four (4) - Eight (8) years of experience in environmental health and safety
    • Or
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP)
  • Two (2) - Four (4) years of experience in environmental health and safety

 

Certifications:

  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics is preferred, eligibility for certification is required.

 

Skills Needed:

  • Must be technically proficient in health physics and knowledgeable of applicable Federal and State regulations
  • Knowledge of radiation safety principles and regulations required
  • Must meet criteria established by Nuclear Regulatory Commission for Radiation Safety Officer of a Type A Broad Scope License
  • Strong written and verbal communication and work organization skills required
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and human relations skills required
  • Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies
